Tom Malinowski conceded the special Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District to Analilia Mejia, who was leading the count but had not been declared the winner. The seat will be filled in an April 16 special general election.
Mejia led Malinowski, 29.1% to 27.7%, as ballots were still being counted. Malinowski conceded five days after the Feb. 5 primary. The special general election to fill the remainder of Mikie Sherrill’s term is scheduled for April 16, with Republican Joe Hathaway as the opponent.
The article describes Mejia’s progressive endorsements and Malinowski’s criticism of attack ads against him, which he said misrepresented his positions. It also notes that affordability was a top issue in the primary and that opposition to the Trump administration’s cancellation of Gateway Tunnel funding became a local campaign issue.
