Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar unveiled the Home Team Act, which would require advance notice before a team relocates and give local communities a chance to buy it. The proposal comes as Illinois and Indiana compete over the Bears’ future and state legislation for a possible Arlington Heights move stalls.
Sanders and Casar said their Home Team Act would require team owners to give a year’s notice before relocating a team to another metropolitan area or across state lines, allowing local communities to buy it at fair market value. Sanders also called for Congress to examine what teams charge fans. Rep. Chuy García is co-sponsoring the House bill.
The article reports that Illinois is trying to keep the Bears as Indiana seeks to attract them to Hammond. The Bears want Illinois legislation guaranteeing property-tax certainty before moving to Arlington Heights, but the Illinois House adjourned without voting on the measure; state Rep. Kam Buckner said progress had been made. Sen. Dick Durbin also urged officials to act quickly to keep the team in Illinois.
