HOW WE SCORE ↗The article reports the lawmakers’ stated reasons and provides event details, but it does not offer a response from the administration or a substantially different perspective on their claims.
- Counterarguments presented — No response from Trump or his administration is included.
- Source diversity — The article includes the lawmakers, an event statement and references to other reporting, but the explanations for the boycott come primarily from its participants.
- Opinion vs reporting — The article is presented as reporting and attributes evaluative claims to their speakers.
The article is structured as a straightforward report, but its extensive quoted criticism of Trump and lack of an administration response give the presentation a slight leftward tilt.

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. April McClain Delaney say they will skip President Trump’s Feb. 24 State of the Union address and attend a counter-event instead. They cite opposition to the administration and its policies.
Van Hollen and McClain Delaney announced that they would boycott the State of the Union and attend the People’s State of the Union event in Washington. The article says both have recently opposed a proposed ICE detention center near Williamsport.
McClain Delaney said attending would not meaningfully serve her constituents and cited policies she said had harmed Maryland residents. Van Hollen said he would not “normalize” Trump’s actions by attending. The article also lists other Democratic lawmakers who plan to miss the address and says Sen. Angela Alsobrooks had not responded to an inquiry about her plans.

4 OUTLETSOutlets agree that Van Hollen plans to skip President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address and attend a rally or counter-event instead. Center outlets focus on area lawmakers’ plans and their stated objections to administration policies and Trump’s treatment of political opponents. Right-leaning outlets cast the plans as a wider Democratic protest and describe the counter-rally dismissively.
