Sen. Angus King met with Danish and Greenland officials as President Donald Trump renewed calls for U.S. ownership of Greenland. King said the United States could address security concerns without taking over the territory.
King criticized the Trump administration’s interest in acquiring Greenland, saying national-security concerns were not a reason to annex or buy it and suggesting that access to natural resources could be another motive. He also warned that military action would damage U.S. relations and standing, and pointed to the existing U.S. military presence in Greenland as an alternative to taking control of the territory.
Trump said that anything short of U.S. ownership was unacceptable and cited the Golden Dome missile defense system, warning that Russia or China could otherwise gain control. Greenland’s prime minister said Greenland would choose Denmark and NATO over the United States if forced to choose.
