President Donald Trump said he would pardon Rep. Henry Cuellar, who was indicted with his wife on federal corruption charges. Trump called the charges retaliation for Cuellar’s border stance; Cuellar thanked Trump and has maintained his innocence.
Trump announced that he would issue Cuellar a full pardon. The Justice Department had said Cuellar and his wife allegedly accepted about $600,000 in bribes and that Cuellar agreed to use his office to influence U.S. foreign policy; three people connected to the case have pleaded guilty. Trump said the charges reflected a “weaponized” Justice Department and accused the Biden administration of targeting Cuellar over his opposition to open borders.
Cuellar thanked Trump and said the decision would let his family move forward. He has maintained his innocence and previously said he believed he was targeted for being a conservative Democrat. The article also recounts that he faced a close 2022 primary challenge and secured another term in November.
