President Donald Trump pardoned Rep. Henry Cuellar and his wife in a federal bribery and conspiracy case. Trump said the prosecution was politically motivated; Cuellar has said he and his wife are innocent.
Trump pardoned Cuellar and his wife on Wednesday, citing what he called a “weaponized” justice system. He said Cuellar was prosecuted because he had criticized President Joe Biden’s immigration policies and praised Cuellar for speaking out against “Open Borders.”
Federal authorities had charged the couple with accepting money in exchange for Cuellar advancing the interests of an energy company controlled by Azerbaijan and a bank in Mexico. Cuellar has said that he and his wife are innocent.
