The House passed the farm bill 224-200, and Rep. Nancy Mace said two of her amendments were included. They would establish a seafood office in the USDA and extend farmer protections and grants to shrimpers and fishermen.
The House passed the farm bill 224-200 on Thursday. The article says the measure updates food and agriculture programs and still faces long odds in the Senate. If it passes there as drafted, the Office of Seafood would be established within the USDA, and shrimpers and fishermen would qualify for the same protections and grants as farmers.
Rep. Nancy Mace said two of the five changes she offered were included. Separately, South Carolina House Bill 4248, which would require shrimp sold in the state to display its country of origin, passed the state House unanimously and is heading to the state Senate. The article says the efforts aim to increase transparency and help shrimpers compete with lower-cost imports; the South Carolina Shrimpers Association praised Mace’s support.
