Reps. Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett said they found troubling conditions during a visit to a Texas ICE family detention center and urged the release of a detained child and broader changes to detention policy.
Castro and Crockett said they visited the Dilley detention center and spoke with a 5-year-old boy and his father. They described the boy as depressed and not eating well, and raised concerns about water safety, schooling and children’s medical conditions. Castro called for the boy’s release, the disbanding of ICE and blocking additional funding; Crockett urged Congress to use its spending power to press for changes.
A federal judge issued a temporary order barring ICE from removing or transferring the boy and his father while litigation proceeds. The Department of Homeland Security denied allegations that officers used the child as “bait,” but ICE did not immediately respond to the lawmakers’ specific claims. Rep. Tony Gonzales defended the facility, calling it “state of the art” and accusing Democrats of “grandstanding.”
