Rep. Sylvia Garcia says ICE told her Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and his brother were not the intended targets of a deadly Houston shooting. ICE and DHS also said the officers lacked body cameras, while DHS blamed funding interruptions on Democratic shutdowns.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia told FOX 26 that ICE said Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and his brother were not the intended targets; according to Garcia, another person in the vehicle had an administrative warrant. She also said the ICE agents involved were not wearing body cameras and that ICE planned to have officers wear them by the end of the month. Garcia said the three detained people would remain in Conroe.
DHS said officers had surveilled an address and stopped a van after an occupant resembled their target. In a separate statement, DHS said body cameras had not been issued to the officers because of Democratic shutdowns, and said the Secure America Act provided funding for cameras and other resources.
