An Emerson College poll found James Talarico leading Jasmine Crockett in the Texas Democratic Senate primary, while the Republican primary remains closely divided. The poll also tested general-election matchups and asked Texans which issues concerned them most.
Emerson College’s poll of 1,165 registered Texas voters, conducted Jan. 10–12, found Talarico ahead of Crockett among likely Democratic primary voters, 47% to 38%. On the Republican side, Ken Paxton led John Cornyn 37% to 36%, with Wesley Hunt at 16%; 29% of likely Republican primary voters were undecided. The poll’s executive director said a Republican runoff appeared likely because no candidate was polling above 50%.
In hypothetical November matchups, the poll showed Republican candidates leading both Democrats, though several contests were close. Respondents most often named the economy as Texas’s most important issue; the poll also reported views on threats to democracy, immigration, housing affordability, healthcare and education. It found divided approval ratings for President Donald Trump and Gov. Greg Abbott, and showed Abbott ahead of Gina Hinojosa in a hypothetical governor-election matchup.
