Texas representatives Greg Casar and Joaquin Castro called for five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos’s release from an ICE detention center after visiting it and speaking at a rally. A federal judge temporarily barred Liam’s removal or transfer while court proceedings continue.
At a San Antonio rally, Greg Casar chanted for Liam Conejo Ramos’s release and described the child as an example of tensions over Department of Homeland Security activity. Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett visited the Dilley Detention Center; Castro said he was concerned about Liam’s wellbeing and reported that other detainees described problems with medicine, food and depression. Castro said he had told ICE officers he wanted Liam released.
A federal judge stayed any removal or transfer of Liam and his father until the court process plays out, while keeping them in the Western District of Texas during the proceedings. The family’s attorney says they are legally in the United States seeking asylum and disputes ICE’s handling of their arrests.
