Republican Matt Van Epps defeated Democrat Aftyn Behn in a closely watched special election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, keeping the seat in Republican hands. Van Epps campaigned with President Donald Trump’s support, while Behn’s showing was closer than the district’s recent Republican margins.
Van Epps defeated Behn in the special election after Behn ran up a large margin in Davidson County and Van Epps carried the rest of the district. With about 95% of votes counted, Van Epps led by a high single-digit margin; the previous Republican incumbent won by 21 points in the prior year’s election.
Trump campaigned for Van Epps, who said he would be “all-in” with the president in Congress. Behn said the result was “the beginning of something” and said she urged Van Epps not to let Affordable Care Act subsidies expire. The article also describes campaign spending and Behn’s criticism of economic policies she said favor wealthy people and corporations.
