TAP FOR WHYCredibility rates Daily Mail, which republished this story. The other scores rate the article itself.
The Daily Mail is an established publisher, but this article’s tabloid presentation and limited original sourcing temper its institutional credibility. It attributes reporting to other outlets and includes a response from DHS.
- Source type — Established international news publisher, though its tabloid style warrants caution.
- Transparency — The article attributes details to Axios, the Minnesota Star Tribune, WCCO and a DHS statement.
- Author attribution — A named author is listed.
- Editorial standards — Sensational headline language and some awkward wording reduce confidence in presentation and precision.
The article includes attributed accounts from lawmakers and a DHS response, as well as reporting from other outlets. It gives limited independent context about the disputed access rules and the shooting, and its sensational framing and occasional imprecise wording weaken the presentation.
HOW WE SCORE ↗The lawmakers’ case for oversight and the agency’s explanation for restricting access are both represented. The article gives little detail on the applicable court orders or the competing accounts of Good’s death, while its headline tilts against the lawmakers.
- Counterarguments presented — DHS’s notice and compliance explanation appears alongside the lawmakers’ account of the visit.
- Source diversity — The story uses statements from lawmakers, a DHS official and other news outlets, but has limited independent sourcing.
- Omitted context — The article does not lay out the court orders or policies in detail, or resolve the competing accounts of the fatal shooting.
- Loaded language — The headline’s “woke army” and “dramatic standoff” phrasing creates a skeptical tilt.
The report includes statements from the lawmakers and DHS, but its headline’s “woke army” phrasing and emphasis on a dramatic standoff cast the lawmakers’ visit in a skeptical, right-leaning frame.

Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig and Kelly Morrison were denied further access to an ICE detention facility during an attempted oversight visit after Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent. The agency said the lawmakers had not followed its seven-day notice requirement.
Omar, Craig and Morrison arrived at an ICE facility in St. Paul seeking an oversight visit and were initially admitted, then escorted out. Omar said they had been invited and described seeing about 20 detainees inside; Craig said members of Congress had a responsibility to assess detention conditions.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the visit did not follow the agency’s seven-day notice requirement and was out of compliance with its policies and court orders. Morrison said the facility’s funding under the One Big Beautiful Bill was the reason given for denying access. The article also reports that lawmakers, including Omar, called for suspending the federal-agent surge in Minneapolis and for an independent investigation into Good’s death.
