Sen. Richard Blumenthal released a report alleging that Tether’s USDT is widely used in Iran-linked sanctions evasion and said he would refer its findings for investigation. Tether disputed the report’s characterization and cited its cooperation with law enforcement.
Blumenthal’s Senate subcommittee report said 84% of 846 crypto wallets sanctioned for ties to Iran and regional proxies transacted almost exclusively in USDT. It also reported that two sanctioned oil smugglers moved more than $603 million in USDT through a network connected to Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iranian financial institutions. Blumenthal said he would refer the findings to the Treasury and Justice Departments for investigation.
Blumenthal accused Tether of failing to freeze some designated wallets promptly and criticized the Trump administration’s oversight of cryptocurrency issuers. Tether rejected the allegations, saying it had helped freeze nearly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT that year and worked with more than 340 law-enforcement agencies.
