In an interview, Sen. Angus King criticized the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and the Senate’s rejection of a war powers resolution. He argued that President Donald Trump acted without sufficient consultation and warned that the administration had not planned for the consequences.
King said he saw no evidence of an imminent threat that justified unilateral military action, and called the Senate vote against limiting Trump’s war powers a “very disappointing” abdication of Congress’ responsibility. Sen. Susan Collins and most Senate Republicans voted against the resolution; the House rejected a similar effort.
King also questioned whether the timing of the strikes was driven by Israel’s plans, citing Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s remarks as he understood them. He warned that Trump’s appeals for Iranians to rise up could leave them exposed if the administration did not support them, and said planning for evacuation and other consequences appeared incomplete.
