Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th District. McKinney said he would prioritize working people and seek to overturn the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
McKinney won the Aug. 4 primary by 4,200 votes out of 112,000 cast, according to unofficial Wayne County results. He said his campaign would focus on working people and restoring Black representation in the district. His stated priorities include universal child care, Medicare for All and removing corporate money from politics.
Thanedar congratulated McKinney and said he would serve out the remainder of his term. McKinney said he wanted to overturn the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by President Donald Trump in 2025.
