Rep. Tom Emmer told a conservative audience that immigrants who do not assimilate should “go the hell back” where they came from, drawing criticism from House candidate Doug Chapin and Rep. Ilhan Omar. Emmer is seeking another term in 2026.
At a Washington event hosted by the Faith & Freedom Coalition, Rep. Tom Emmer criticized what he described as a lack of assimilation among Minnesota’s Somali community and said immigrants who do not assimilate should return to where they came from. He also said Minnesotans were reluctant to speak out for fear of being called racist or Islamophobic. Emmer has previously linked public assistance fraud cases to members of the Somali community, a characterization critics say unfairly paints the broader community.–
House candidate Doug Chapin criticized Emmer’s remarks, saying they dehumanized an entire community. Rep. Ilhan Omar, responding on X, said she had assimilated “all the way to Congress” and that Emmer still told her to go back where she came from. Emmer is seeking another term in 2026 and faces Republican primary challengers Mike Foley and Chris Corey; his spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.–
