Minnesota gubernatorial candidates debated immigration, agriculture and fraud at a Farmfest forum ahead of the Aug. 11 primary. U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and the Republican candidates offered contrasting proposals and criticized one another’s approaches.
The Farmfest forum brought together DFL candidate Amy Klobuchar and Republican candidates Lisa Demuth, Kendall Qualls and Mike Lindell ahead of Minnesota’s Aug. 11 gubernatorial primary. On immigration, Demuth said she would support federal laws, Qualls said he would eliminate the idea of Minnesota as a sanctuary state, and Lindell said he would enforce laws concerning protests and businesses hiring undocumented immigrants. Klobuchar said she supported border enforcement funding but believed the federal agency needed reform.
Candidates also discussed agriculture and fraud. Klobuchar proposed an audit and surprise inspections to address fraud; Demuth blamed it on Democratic control and cited state measures she said she had advanced. Qualls called fraud a leadership problem, while Lindell described it as a “blessing” because it had opened people’s eyes. In closing, Klobuchar warned against electing a governor who would be a “rubber stamp” for President Donald Trump.
