Shimon Blau submitted petitions to run as an unaffiliated candidate against Democratic nominee Melat Kiros, though election officials still must determine whether his signatures are sufficient. Blau said he launched his campaign in response to Kiros’ victory and criticized her comments and conduct.
Blau, a physician, submitted petitions shortly before Thursday’s deadline. Colorado election officials said he needs 1,500 valid signatures from the 1st Congressional District and will review unaffiliated candidates’ petitions by July 30. A spokesperson said he could not confirm whether Blau’s submission would be sufficient.
Kiros defeated longtime U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in the June 30 Democratic primary and also faces Republican Christy Peterson. Blau said in his campaign announcement that he was concerned about Kiros’ rhetoric and her refusal to meet with Denver Jewish community leaders. The article reports that Peterson had raised no money through the end of March, based on Federal Election Commission records, and notes the district’s strong Democratic tilt.
