Ron Hanks secured a place on the Republican primary ballot to challenge U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd in Colorado’s 3rd District. The June contest follows disagreements over Hurd’s record and marks a rematch of their 2024 primary.
Ron Hanks won enough delegate support at the Colorado Republican assembly in Pueblo on April 10 to qualify for the June 30 primary against incumbent Jeff Hurd. Hurd chose to qualify by petition rather than seek delegate support. Hurd defeated Hanks in the 2024 primary by nearly 13 percentage points.
Hanks has criticized Hurd for insufficiently conservative positions, including support for the Gunnison Outdoor Resource Protection Act. Hurd said the measure has local support and argued that land-management decisions should involve affected communities. Hurd has also broken with Republicans on some issues, including voting against President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada; Hurd said the tariffs hurt producers in his district. Two Democrats, Alex Kelloff and Dwayne Romero, are also running in the district’s June primary.
