At a fundraiser for Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argued that his victory could demonstrate the wider appeal of progressive candidates. She also described plans to organize voters and elect other progressive candidates.
Ocasio-Cortez said at the fundraiser that an El-Sayed victory in Michigan could change assumptions about where progressive candidates can win. El-Sayed is set to face Republican Mike Rogers in a race that could affect control of the Senate. Ocasio-Cortez also said progressives would organize voters in Southern communities and work to elect Justin Pearson in Tennessee and Angie Nixon in Florida.
Ocasio-Cortez said the effort was about more than one race or election cycle, and linked it to guaranteeing health care for Americans. She has not ruled out a possible presidential run, according to a response she gave ABC News earlier this year.
