Rep. Chrissy Houlahan said no Republican colleague had contacted her to express concern after President Trump called her and five other Democratic lawmakers “traitors” and said their conduct was punishable by death. The story also reports the lawmakers’ defense of their video about refusing illegal military orders and the White House’s response.
At a Friday news conference, Houlahan said no Republican colleague had reached out to her publicly or privately and called the silence disappointing. She described Trump’s remarks about her and five other Democratic lawmakers as a threat to her life and an embrace of political violence. The article says Trump made the remarks after the lawmakers released a video stating that service members can refuse illegal orders; it also notes that they did not identify specific illegal orders and that it was unclear whether service members had been asked to break the law.
Houlahan made her comments at a news conference promoting a bill to prohibit administration spending on sending U.S. troops into direct hostilities with Venezuela. The other lawmakers issued a joint statement defending their position. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump did not want to execute members of Congress and argued that the lawmakers’ video encouraged service members to defy lawful orders. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro condemned Trump’s rhetoric.
