We can sign up to help out here. 💬 HOLD MAGA ACCOUNTABLE IN AZ TRUMP THREATENS PREMEDITATED MASS MURDER IF HE DOESN’T GET HIS WAY, AGAIN The ceasefire in Trump’s war with Iran is set to expire tomorrow night. It is unclear what happens next – as is typical, the White House is giving deeply mixed messages. Trump has claimed a deal could come together relatively quickly, although since he falsely insisted Tehran “agreed to everything” on Friday this is essentially meaningless. He also says he is unlikely to extend the ceasefire without one and is once again threatening genocidal attacks on the country, pledging to “blow up” the “whole country” and knock out “every single power plant and “every single bridge.” Following Trump’s initial pledge to wipe out an entire civilization, Representative John Lawson (D-CT) filed a resolution to impeach him. According to the League of Women Voters, “impeachment proceedings can be initiated by any member of the House. Once this process is initiated, an investigation involving all relevant committees, which is usually overseen by the House Judiciary Committee, takes place.” If a majority of the Judiciary Committee concludes that Trump engaged in an impeachable offense, the process can proceed to the full House. Members could also force a floor vote by raising it as a question of the privileges of the House. We all know the reality here. Mike Johnson’s House of Representatives is filled with people who wouldn’t vote to impeach when Trump tried to kill Congress, and even if we could squeeze it through in the House we are miles from the votes to convict in the Senate. Given the depths of depravity Trump has sunk to, it is still worth raising our voices for - to keep Trump’s unhinged speech and behavior in the news and encourage journalists to report it for what it is, to force Republican members of Congress to be on record as supporting genocide, and if nothing else because someone needs to draw a moral line in the sand at premeditated mass murder. 🗣️ Let’s tell our Members of Congress to co-sponsor HR1155, and tell them we need to impeach Trump immediately. 🗣️ YES, MASS MURDER IS IMPEACHABLE DEADLINE TO WEIGH IN ON TRUMP RULE THAT WOULD EVICT THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN For decades, undocumented family members have been able to live with documented relatives in public housing. Trump’s Housing and Urban Development Department is proposing a change to the mixed status rule that would end this protection, forcing some 24,000 families to choose between separating or risking eviction and homelessness. It’s not just cruel. It’s also costly, since unsubsidized residents in federal housing paying higher rent, thus supporting everyone else, and creating a whole new set of administrative burdens on an weighed-down system. Housing activists are pushing back, trying to keep families housed and together. The bill, if passed, would prohibit the use of federal education funding to “develop, implement, facilitate, host, or promote any program or activity for, or to provide or promote literature or other materials to, children under the age of 18 that includes sexually oriented material…” PEN America and 100 grassroots group are warning us that the bill “will compel nationwide book censorship. It confuses obscenity with identity and stigmatizes vulnerable young people, particularly trans children and teens, based on who they are. It will continue to drain funding from our already underfunded schools and libraries. Again and again and again we have seen people rise up against authoritarian regimes, standing shoulder to shoulder with their neighbors - and winning. We saw it in Minnesota in January, where the Day of Truth and Freedom shutdown was a crucial turning point against Operation Metro Surge. Repression depends on lies and division and silence. When we stand together, unified, we can demand the world we need. They are also not easy. The Twin Cities spent years building the infrastructure that allowed their strike to succeed. Building something similar on the national level will take all of us. In many ways, the planned May Day shutdowns are a capacity test to see exactly what needs to be done. Let’s learn how to do our part. 🏫 Freedom Trainers and the Grassroots Democracy Initiative are holding community strike readiness trainings throughout this month, talking us through practical steps of what it takes to go from solidarity in words to solidarity in action. We can sign up to get strike ready on Thursday at 6PM ET, on April 22nd or on April 27th here. 🏫 STRIKE READY TRAININGS THIS MONTH (And if we haven’t already, let’s take the pledge to shut it down for May Day – no work, no school, no shopping!) HAVE INSIDERS FOUND A NEW WAY TO PROFIT? The use of online gambling and prediction markets on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket has been on the rise over the last year, and observers have spotted troubling patterns of betting on political issues like elections, assassinations, and acts of war. CNN found that one Polymarket user has made nearly $1 million by winning 93% of their five-figure wagers about unannounced military operations in Iran, leading many to suspect this user is a political or military official with control over or foreknowledge about these decisions. There is currently no federal recourse against government officials betting in these prediction markets. Lawmakers have introduced the Banning Event Trading on Sensitive Operations and Federal Functions, the BETS OFF Act, to prevent wagering on events “where an individual knows or controls the outcome” and to legislate other common sense restrictions on the prediction market. 🗣️ Let’s encourage our reps to support this legislation – scripts and more of this summary courtesy of 5Calls here. 🗣️ ANOTHER GAME OF CORRUPTION WHAC-A-MOLE While we’re at it, let’s make sure we’re urging members in both houses to support war powers resolutions on Iran when they come up this week and folks in the House to oppose the “clean” extension of warrantless surveillance, which is set for consideration tomorrow. THE EFFORT TO INTIMIDATE ELECTION WORKERS IS WELL UNDERWAY Election officials are nervous as hell about what Trump is going to do this November. A Brennan Center survey released yesterday indicated 50% of local election officials are worried about political interference ahead of the midterms, with 32% reporting facing threats, harassment or abuse already (h/t to the essential WTF Just Happened Today). These folks need our support now, more than ever, starting with making sure they have the resources it takes to keep our election systems resilient in the face of bomb threats, cyberattacks or ballot drop boxes being set on fire as they were in 2024. The Brennan Center has a series of recommendations for policymakers to ensure purposeful disruptions don’t stop voters from voting or election workers from counting. They’re focused on ensuring election officials have the expertise, resources, and back-up plans in place to prepare for, prevent, and recover from physical and cyberattacks. 🗣️ Let’s reach out to our state legislators (contact info) and governors (contact info) and urge them to follow this guidance and prioritize getting the folks who administer the vote what they need to power through disruptions. Special elections are heavily impacted by who turns out, with the result being votes that don’t closely reflect the political tilt of the electorate. The campaign that does a better job of getting people excited and letting them know there’s something to vote on in the first place has a huge advantage at times when no one is normally preparing to cast a ballot. Democrats should be strongly positioned to win in the New Jersey 11th Congressional District special election. It’s a blue district last represented by now-governor Mikie Sherrill. Working Families Party pick and Abolish ICE progressive Analilia Mejia is heavily favored, having outraised the GOP’s former Randolph mayor Joe Hathaway by 2-to-1 and building a big lead in the few polls taken. But any underperformance is likely to be held against her uncompromising progressive message, and the election will take place… this Thursday, a day when no red-blooded American is thinking about elections. We’re kidding, mostly. ☎️ But let’s be sure we’re reminding as many people as we can of this unusual late-week vote, just in case. Get Sexual Predators Out Of The House, Regardless of Party

Eric Swalwell (D-CA) told the San Francisco Chronicle they had sexual encounters while she worked for him (in and of itself a career-ending violation of House rules), and that he sexually assaulted her twice. CNN then ran a report about this staffer in which she described Swalwell leaving her bruised and bleeding, along with three other women who accused him of sexual misconduct – all of whose stories they found corroboration for. The Manhattan DA’s office has opened an investigation into the congressman. While Democrats very quickly and overwhelmingly responded with support for the victims, rescinded endorsements, resignations from his campaign and demands for Swalwell to drop out of the governor’s race, there have been fewer voices calling for the next step: his resignation from Congress. (Although the number is growing, with at least five House Dems led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal indicating they would support his removal.) Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is planning to force a vote in the coming days to expel Swalwell. Democrats have indicated they will respond by moving to expel Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX), who has been caught pressuring multiple female staffers for sex acts. To cut to the chase: good. The evidence we have shows Swalwell and Gonzales are sexual predators. They cannot be trusted with power, and they should be removed from public service. The reality that these men may be held accountable for what they’ve done only as part of a partisan tit-for-tat is a systemic failure. The evidence that Rep. Gonzales pressured an aide for sex acts and retaliated against her when their “affair” was discovered has been public for weeks. Speaker Johnson and House leadership shamelessly stood by him, and Rep. Luna wasn’t nearly as quick to force them into action. How long would this have gone on if they hadn’t found a Democrat to punish to even the score? Powerful people are getting away with hurting folks, and their fellow insiders are protecting them from justice until it can be used to serve their broader agendas. We are furious with their fellow elites protecting them from justice until they can use it to serve their broader agendas. We are demanding that those who claim they are fit to lead show enough leadership to acknowledge that certain acts disqualify you from public office regardless of party identification. It is clear that both Swalwell and Gonzales took advantage of their position to get away with exploiting and abusing women, and neither of them should be allowed to remain in the House of Representatives. It is also clear that they are facing the appropriate consequences for the wrong reasons. The Washington Post released a poll on Friday showing a map that would help Democrats gain seats to balance Trump’s gerrymandering has a 52-47 lead among likely voters, larger than the margin of error but substantially smaller than Governor Spanberger’s victory in November. They also confirmed early data suggesting that opponents and registered Republicans are more motivated to turn out. This is going to be a fight to the very end. 💬 Daily phonebanks have been in gear for a while (sign up here!), and now with just over two weeks to go Virginians for Fair Elections has started texting voters as well. (Check our action page for multiple updates!) Among those asking us to get more engaged is Dan Osborn, an independent working class populist, veteran and union leader who came within six points of a stunning upset against Deb Fischer in the U.S. Senate race in Nebraska in 2024. This fall, he is trying again, this time seeking to unseat Republican incumbent and billionaire megadonor Pete Ricketts. If he succeeds, it could put in the majority in the Senate in play and shake up American politics. Republicans are terrified, and have even resorted to attempting to put a plant into the Democratic primary as an obstacle to him. 🙋🏼 The Osborn team is holding its monthly all-hands volunteer call TONIGHT at 7:30PM ET, where we can get an update on the race and learn more about how to get involved. When Democrats don’t contest those races, extremists fill them by default. But it’s hard for potential candidates to decide to run if they don’t think they’ll have support. and our friends at Every State Blue are working to making it easier. They’ve raised and distributed over $1 million to Democratic legislative nominees in Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee since 2017, a game-changer for rural Dems. But they’re not doing it alone. Citizens Bank provides financing to the detention camp operators, with each receiving more than half a billion dollars. A growing movement is emerging to draw attention to Citizens’ complicity and urge depositors to close their accounts. 📝 The De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition is asking us to take at least one action a week to keep the heat on, starting with emailing their CEO Bruce Van Saun (bruce.vansaun@citizensbank.com) and head of investor relations Kristin Silberberg (Kristin.Silberberg@citizensbank.com). Callais, one that could fundamentally change the 2026 elections. Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 bans racial discrimination in voting, including drawing election maps that break up Black communities across multiple districts to weaken their political power. Now a MAGA-packed high court is considering striking it down, which could lead to 15 or more congressional districts being redrawn. The attorney who argued this case before the Supreme Court (twice) is Janai Nelson, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and one of the most respected voting rights lawyers in the country, and she’s joining Red, Wine and Blue TOMORROW at 7:00PM ET to update us on this assault on fair elections.
