Rep. David Scott, a Georgia Democrat seeking his 13th term in Congress, dies at age 80

Georgia's Democratic congressman David Scott has died at age 80. Scott was the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and was seeking his 13th term in Congress despite challenges from within his party. Scott was the Democrats’ ranking member on the Agriculture Committee, despite most recently representing a metro Atlanta district. The congressman was once a leading voice for Democrats on farm aid policy and food aid for consumers and a prominent Black member of the moderate Blue Dog caucus. But Scott faced criticism and concerns in recent years because of declining health. Scott was born in South Carolina and graduated from Florida A&M University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Sen. Warren calls for greater transparency into Federal Reserve nominee's financial holdings

President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, is likely to face tough questions about his vast financial holdings at a hearing next week by the Senate Banking Committee. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the top Democrat on the panel, said she had met with Warsh Thursday and urged him to disclose more information about his assets than was included in financial disclosure forms released earlier this week. Warsh, a former top official at the Fed and a wealthy investor, listed financial assets worth well more than $100 million. It’s the latest hurdle for Warsh, who is already facing an unusually turbulent path toward the Fed chair position.

Democrat Analilia Mejia and Republican Joe Hathaway compete for suburban New Jersey House seat

Analilia Mejia will try to expand Democratic momentum in New Jersey as she and Republican Joe Hathaway compete in a special election for the U.S. House. The prize in Thursday's contest is the seat vacated by Mikie Sherrill when she was elected governor last year. Mejia is a former head of the Working Families Alliance who is endorsed by Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. She emerged from a crowded Democratic primary in February. Hathaway is a council member in suburban Randolph. He was unchallenged in the GOP contest. Mejia has been critical of President Donald Trump. Hathaway has seized on Mejia’s progressive credentials, and national Republicans cast her as a socialist.

Democrats crow about fundraising in competitive Senate races

Democrats are boasting of eye-popping fundraising hauls in some of this year's most competitive Senate contests. It's a potential sign of enthusiasm on the left and a cash infusion they’ll need in the uphill quest for the Senate majority. For the first three months of the year, Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico’s campaign says he brought in $27 million, while vulnerable incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia said he raised $14 million. Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s campaign said he’ll report $13.8 million and former Sen. Sherrod Brown will report $12.5 million in his comeback bid in Ohio. The money will help Democrats make their case to voters, but control of the Senate will be decided in territory that favors Republicans.

Senate rejects effort to halt arms sales to Israel, but most Democrats vote to block them

More than three dozen Democrats supported an effort by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday to block arms sales to Israel, signaling a growing discontent in the party with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the wars in Gaza and Iran. The two resolutions to block U.S. sales of bulldozers and bombs to Israel were opposed by all Republicans and rejected 40-59 and 36-63. But Sanders has repeatedly forced votes on the issue to put pressure on his colleagues — both Democrats and Republicans — to oppose Netanyahu’s regime.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in New Jersey's special congressional election

A special election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District on Thursday will fill the U.S. House seat most recently held by Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill. The major party nominees to replace her are Democrat Analilia Mejia, a progressive organizer, and Republican Joe Hathaway, a member of the Randolph Township Council. Sherrill won the district in 2024 with about 57% of the vote. If Democrats hold the seat, they'll further narrow the slim majority Republicans hold in the chamber, at least until the next special election in California in June.
