Richard C. Shelby represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1987 to 2023, after serving in the House from 1979 to 1987.
A lawyer and former Alabama state legislator, Shelby served in the U.S. House from 1979 to 1987 and in the U.S. Senate from 1987 to 2023.
Shelby graduated from the University of Alabama in 1957 and earned a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1963. Shelby worked as a Tuscaloosa city prosecutor from 1963 to 1971, a U.S. magistrate, and a special assistant attorney general of Alabama.
