Lamar Alexander

Alexander served as governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987 and as U.S. secretary of education from 1991 to 1993.
Alexander earned a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1962 and a law degree from New York University School of Law in 1965. After establishing a legal career in Nashville, Tennessee, Alexander served as governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987. Alexander was president of the University of Tennessee from 1988 to 1991, then served as U.S. secretary of education from 1991 to 1993.
