Kweisi Mfume
Kweisi Mfume has represented Maryland’s 7th district in the U.S. House since May 2020. Ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Government Operations.
Mfume served on a council from 1979 to 1986 and represented a congressional district from 1987 to 1996. Mfume led the NAACP from 1996 to 2004.
Mfume earned a General Educational Development credential through the Community College of Baltimore County, attended Baltimore City Community College, received a Bachelor of Science from Morgan State University in 1976, and earned a Master of Arts from Johns Hopkins University in 1984. Mfume served on a council from 1979 to 1986, then in the U.S. House from 1987 to 1996, including as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus from 1991 to 1993. From 1996 to 2004, Mfume served as president and chief executive officer of the NAACP. Mfume sought a U.S. Senate seat in 2006 and lost the primary.
