Kevin McCarthy

Kevin McCarthy represented California in the U.S. House from 2007 until resigning on December 31, 2023. Succeeded by Vince Fong.

McCarthy served in the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2006 and as Speaker of the U.S. House in 2023.

McCarthy attended Bakersfield College in 1985, earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Bakersfield, in 1989, and earned an MBA there in 1994. McCarthy worked as congressional staff from 1987 to 2002, then served in the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2006, including as minority leader from 2004 to 2006. Elected to the U.S. House in 2006, McCarthy served from 2007 to 2023. House leadership posts included chief deputy whip from 2009 to 2011, majority whip from 2011 to 2014, majority leader from 2014 to 2019, minority leader from 2019 to 2023, and Speaker in 2023.
