After military service in the Korean War, Conyers worked as an aide to Representative John Dingell and took part in the civil rights movement before entering Congress.
Conyers earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wayne State University in 1957 and a Bachelor of Laws from Wayne State University Law School in 1958. Conyers chaired the House Oversight Committee from 1989 to 1995, served as the Judiciary Committee’s ranking Democratic member from 1995 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2017, and chaired that committee from 2007 to 2011.
