Manchin earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from West Virginia University in 1970. Before public office, Manchin helped establish and led Enersystems, a family-operated coal brokerage. Manchin served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1982 to 1986, followed by the West Virginia State Senate from 1986 to 1996.
