Senator Ben Cardin announced his retirement from the Senate, opening up a seat for the first time since 2006.
Benjamin L. Cardin represented Maryland in the U.S. Senate from 2007 to 2025, after serving in the House from 1987 to 2007.
Cardin served in Maryland’s House of Delegates from 1967 to 1987 and was the chamber’s speaker from 1979 to 1987.
Cardin attended Baltimore City College, graduating in 1961, then earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964 and a law degree from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1967. A lawyer, Cardin served in Maryland’s House of Delegates from 1967 to 1987, including as speaker from 1979 to 1987.
