André Carson made history as the second Muslim American elected to Congress and the first to serve on the House Intelligence Committee, breaking significant barriers in national security roles. A former Indianapolis police officer who converted to Islam in the 1990s, he brings a unique law enforcement perspective to his progressive advocacy on criminal justice reform, civil liberties, and economic equality. Carson has been a vocal champion of interfaith dialogue and religious freedom while representing one of Indiana's most diverse districts, which includes much of Indianapolis. He succeeded his grandmother Julia Carson in Congress, continuing a family legacy of Democratic leadership in central Indiana.
