Require the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out activities to suppress wildfires
- Suppress wildfires within 24 hours: On covered National Forest System lands, the Forest Service would have to use all available resources to suppress a detected wildfire with the purpose of extinguishing it within 24 hours. Covered lands are areas in severe, extreme, or exceptional drought; at National Wildland Fire Preparedness Level 5; or in a fireshed ranked in the top 10% for wildfire exposure
- Limit backfires and burnouts: The Forest Service could start a backfire or burnout during a wildfire only on the responsible incident commander’s order or when necessary to protect firefighting personnel’s health and safety. It would have to use all available resources to control the fire until it is extinguished
- Allow state and local suppression efforts: The Forest Service could not inhibit suppression efforts by state or local firefighting agencies authorized to respond to a wildfire on covered lands
