Weather Act Reauthorization Act of 2025
- Continues weather research programs: The bill would reauthorize NOAA weather research programs through FY2030, including the U.S. Weather Research Program, and give statutory authority to the VORTEX tornado-research program. It would also revise programs involving hurricane forecasts, ocean observations, tsunami warnings, and landslide preparedness
- Improves forecasts and observation systems: The bill would require NOAA to support forecasting technology, including more accurate radar, better forecasts in underserved areas, and coastal-flood forecasting. It would also cover forecasting improvements for atmospheric rivers, storm surge, aviation weather, and other topics named in later sections
- Expands commercial weather data use: The bill would require NOAA to acquire weather-related data from private companies and test whether that data works with NOAA systems. It would also call for comparing the cost and benefits of federal and private options for filling observation gaps
