This bill addresses a long-standing tension between preserving culturally significant landscapes and promoting resource extraction. It would permanently safeguard a large area around Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with deep spiritual and historical importance to numerous Native American tribes, from new oil, gas, and mineral development.

If it passes, it solidifies a commitment to protecting irreplaceable archaeological sites, sacred ceremonial lands, and the natural environment, including the park's renowned dark skies. If it doesn't pass, the area could remain open to new industrial leasing and drilling, risking further damage to cultural resources, environmental quality, and the traditional way of life for local tribal communities, as well as impacting the visitor experience at the national park.
