President Donald Trump attacked Sen. Bill Cassidy ahead of Louisiana’s Republican Senate primary, while a recent poll showed Cassidy trailing challengers Julia Letlow and John Fleming.
Trump used a Saturday Truth Social post to call Cassidy a “disloyal disaster” and urge Louisiana voters to support his challengers. Trump has endorsed Letlow, while state Treasurer John Fleming is also seeking the Republican nomination. A recent Emerson College poll showed Cassidy at 21 percent, Fleming at 28 percent and Letlow at 27 percent.
Trump linked his criticism to Cassidy’s vote to convict him in his second impeachment trial. Cassidy told reporters last week that he did not think Trump liked him much but said they worked well together, citing bills he led that Trump signed into law.
