President Trump endorsed Ken Paxton in Texas’s Republican Senate runoff against John Cornyn, a week before voters choose the party’s nominee. The endorsement comes as Senate Republicans have backed Cornyn and warn Paxton could be a weaker general-election candidate.
President Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday ahead of the May 26 Republican Senate runoff against Sen. John Cornyn. Trump praised Paxton and criticized Cornyn’s past support for him. Paxton and Cornyn advanced to the runoff after neither received 50% in the March 3 primary; Cornyn received about 42% and Paxton almost 41%. Early voting began Monday.
Cornyn urged Republican voters to support him, arguing that Paxton would be a weak nominee and could jeopardize Republicans’ down-ballot prospects. Senate Republicans have backed Cornyn, whom they consider better positioned to face Democratic nominee James Talarico. John Thune said the endorsement was Trump’s decision, while Susan Collins criticized Paxton’s ethics and praised Cornyn; Lindsey Graham said a Paxton nomination would be an uphill path. Talarico said the runoff’s outcome did not change who he viewed as his opponents.
