Rep. Mike Collins won Georgia’s Republican Senate primary runoff and is set to face Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. The race could affect control of the Senate.
CBS News projected Collins as the winner of the runoff over Derek Dooley. Collins finished first with almost 41% of the vote; Dooley had received around 30% in the primary last month. Rep. Buddy Carter was eliminated in that primary.
President Trump endorsed Collins shortly before the runoff, while Gov. Brian Kemp had endorsed Dooley. Collins said in his victory speech that he had spoken with Dooley and Kemp and that they were “on board.” Ossoff called Collins an “extremist” and sought to tie him to Trump’s policies. The article says the general election could help determine Senate control and notes that Collins faces allegations of misusing congressional funds, which are under investigation by the House Ethics Committee; Collins has denied the allegations.
