Rep. Ro Khanna defended his support for Senate candidate Graham Platner while condemning Platner’s past behavior and urging his campaign not to attack a woman who described a troubling relationship. Khanna contrasted Platner’s policy positions with Sen. Susan Collins’s record and argued Maine voters are focused on the race’s issues.
In an interview on “Face the Nation,” Khanna said Platner’s behavior was “misogynistic” and “shameful,” but argued that Maine voters knew about his past and were willing to give him “grace and redemption.” Khanna said he believed Lyndsey Field, who described alleged intimidation and physical incidents in her relationship with Platner, and called on Platner’s campaign not to attack her or the journalists who reported on the allegations.
Khanna said he continued to support Platner because of his positions on national health insurance, taxing billionaires and opposing the Iran war, contrasting those positions with Collins’s support for the war and tax breaks for billionaires. He also said PTSD did not excuse bad behavior, while arguing that the effects of war on veterans should be recognized.
