At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Thom Tillis sharply criticized Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over immigration enforcement, disaster relief and her past accounts of killing a dog and a goat. He also threatened to block Trump nominees unless DHS answers questions about enforcement in North Carolina.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Thom Tillis criticized Kristi Noem’s leadership of ICE and FEMA. He said ICE should focus on detaining people in the country illegally who have committed crimes, and faulted Noem’s policy requiring her personal approval for disaster aid above $100,000, which he said delayed assistance to North Carolina after Hurricane Helene.
Tillis also challenged Noem over her refusal, as he described it, to acknowledge that she had wrongly called Renee Good and Alex Pretti “domestic terrorists” after they were fatally shot by immigration agents. He criticized her accounts in her 2024 book of killing a dog and a goat, then said he would block Trump nominees unless DHS provided answers about immigration enforcement in North Carolina. He said he had called for Noem’s resignation.
