Palm Beach County’s District 6 commission primary has drawn attention to Sara Baxter’s fundraising, her reversal on running for Congress, and President Donald Trump’s endorsement. The race also centers on county spending and the contested Project Tango data center.
Palm Beach County’s only contested commission race on the Aug. 18 primary ballot is for District 6, with two Republicans and three Democrats seeking their parties’ nominations. Incumbent county mayor Sara Baxter has raised nearly $400,000, compared with $54,000 for Republican challenger Elizabeth Accomando. Baxter refunded a $10,000 contribution from a developer behind Project Tango after opposition to the data center emerged; commissioners later voted 5-1 to block the project, and Baxter did not participate in the debate because she had publicly opposed it.
Baxter had left the commission race to run for Congress, then changed her mind after President Donald Trump urged her to stay in the local race and endorsed her. The Democratic candidates are Katherine Waldron, Rudy Tinker and Mario Guzman. The article reports their campaign funds and backgrounds, and identifies county sheriff funding, state spending demands and development as issues for the commission.
