Sen. Mark Warner said he will oppose Jay Clayton’s confirmation as director of national intelligence, citing Clayton’s refusal at a hearing to say Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Warner also discussed foreign election interference and criticized the SAVE America Act.
Warner said he would not vote to confirm Clayton as director of national intelligence after Clayton declined at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing to say Biden won the 2020 election, saying only that Biden was “certified” as the winner. Warner nevertheless expected Clayton to be confirmed.
Warner said released documents about alleged Chinese election interference showed mostly previously known information and no proof the 2020 election was stolen. He said Russia and Iran posed bigger election threats than China. Warner also said he supported a uniform voter ID requirement but opposed the SAVE America Act, which he called a measure about voter disenfranchisement.
