Sen. Bill Cassidy said his vote to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general was a difficult choice, citing both a deal to nullify a disputed fund and concerns about protections for President Donald Trump and his family from IRS probes.
The Senate confirmed Blanche 50-49 early Saturday, with Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voting against him. Cassidy said his support was influenced by a deal Blanche reached with Sen. John Cornyn to nullify the Anti-Weaponization Fund, and by Cornyn’s comfort with the deal. Cassidy said he viewed the fund as effectively dead given the process required to reinstate it.
Cassidy also said he nearly voted no because Blanche continued to grant protection to Trump and his family from IRS probes. He said no American should be targeted by the law or be above it, while also citing the need for stable leadership at the Justice Department.
