Rep. Michael Lawler erupted at a House hearing on immigration policy, clashed with Reps. Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal, and later called them profane names. The confrontation followed Lawler’s extended remarks after he was invited to introduce a witness.
Lawler was invited to a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing to introduce the mother of Sheridan Gorman, who was allegedly killed in Chicago by a Venezuelan immigrant without legal status. Instead, the article reports, he delivered an extended argument about immigration and sanctuary-city policies, despite being told to limit his remarks to an introduction. Lawler said Americans should feel the same outrage over Gorman and Laken Riley’s deaths as over Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s deaths.
Lawler and Raskin exchanged shouts after Raskin said he did feel that outrage. Jayapal called on committee chair Tom McClintock to suspend Lawler’s comments, then said the hearing would not allow such conduct again. Outside the hearing, Lawler called Raskin and Jayapal profane names and said they should have let him finish his statement.
