Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth won the Republican primary for governor, setting up a general-election contest with Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar. The report also describes the party’s effort to nominate a candidate it thought could defeat Klobuchar and the candidates’ competing claims over state fraud scandals.
NBC News projected Demuth as the winner over MyPillow founder Mike Lindell. Lindell had led limited public polling and had President Donald Trump’s endorsement, but questions about his residency from a fellow Republican and other party members’ concerns about his general-election prospects hampered his campaign.
At a Farmfest forum, Klobuchar called the Republican candidates “a rubber stamp of Donald Trump.” Demuth blamed “incompetent Democrat control” for fraud cases involving Medicaid and pandemic aid, and pointed to an oversight committee she established while leading the state House. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz had ended his reelection campaign earlier in the year, and Klobuchar subsequently launched her campaign.
