NBC News projected that Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton won the Democratic Senate primary, defeating Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly. She will face Republican Don Tracy in November for the seat held by retiring Sen. Dick Durbin.
Stratton led in Cook County with 40% of the vote to Krishnamoorthi’s 29% and Kelly’s 23%, with about 80% of the expected vote counted. The article reports that Stratton overcame a large spending disadvantage and was backed by Gov. JB Pritzker and Sen. Tammy Duckworth.
During the campaign, Stratton criticized Washington Democrats’ response to President Donald Trump and described herself as the most progressive candidate, citing support for Medicare for All and a $25 minimum wage. She also opposed continuing Chuck Schumer as Senate Democratic leader. NBC News projected Republican Don Tracy as the winner of his party’s primary.
