After finishing third in Louisiana’s Republican Senate primary, Bill Cassidy said he has no regrets about voting to impeach Donald Trump and will not endorse either candidate in the runoff. Cassidy also ruled out another run for office and criticized taxpayer funding for Trump’s White House ballroom project.
Cassidy finished third in the May 16 Republican primary with 23%, behind Julia Letlow, who received 45%, and state treasurer John Fleming, who received 28%; Letlow and Fleming advanced to a runoff. Speaking with reporters after the result, Cassidy said he had no regrets about his 2021 impeachment vote against Trump and said he would serve the remaining seven months of his Senate term. He ruled out running for governor or the U.S. House and said he would not endorse either runoff candidate.
Cassidy also said he opposed $1 billion in taxpayer funding for Trump’s White House ballroom project, calling it “a spit in the eye” of voters struggling with affordability. He declined to say whether Trump had been honest with him, but later said the White House had lied when officials told him the president would not endorse anyone in the race.
