South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone to serve the remainder of her late brother Lindsey Graham’s Senate term. Her caretaker appointment opens a competitive Republican primary ahead of the Aug. 11 vote.
McMaster said he appointed Nordone after asking whether she wanted to serve out her brother’s term. Nordone called it a privilege, promised to work hard and support the president, and said Lindsey Graham would have wanted the decision. President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune publicly supported the appointment.
The appointment sets up a race for the full term, though Nordone has not said whether she will run. Republicans are weighing bids, with Rep. Russell Fry and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette mentioned as possible contenders; Mace and Norman have signaled interest, but no candidates have formally announced.
