Maryland state Del. Adrian Boafo won the Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by Rep. Steny Hoyer, with pro-crypto and pro-Israel groups spending millions to support him. The result followed a divisive contest that pitted Hoyer’s preferred successor against a candidate endorsed by Nancy Pelosi.
Boafo won the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 5th District in a 24-candidate field. United Democracy Project spent $5.7 million to promote him, and the crypto-aligned Protect Progress spent $5.5 million largely to benefit his campaign. Several rivals denounced the groups’ spending, while Sen. Chris Van Hollen accused them of trying to buy the seat.
Hoyer, Boafo’s former campaign manager, backed him as his preferred successor. Pelosi endorsed Harry Dunn, and the contest highlighted divisions among the state’s top Democrats. Boafo said “big money has no place in politics”; Hoyer defended him in an ad. Boafo has called for strengthening the U.S.-Israel alliance while criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The article says he is all but guaranteed to win the seat in November.
