Sen. Susan Collins blamed Democrats for the lack of body cameras on ICE agents after an agent fatally shot a man in Maine. Sen. Patty Murray and House committee aides disputed her account, saying funding and equipment were available but not deployed.
Collins said the cameras had not been distributed because the government shutdown delayed their purchase and deployment, and she expected ICE agents to receive them within 45 days. She also said Democrats were responsible for the shutdown and described the Maine man's death as a horrible tragedy while an investigation proceeds. [p021] [p022]
Murray said Republicans had provided ICE with substantial funding that could have paid for body cameras, and argued that the administration had failed to deploy them and establish accountability measures. Anonymous House Homeland Security Committee aides said cameras had been purchased and guidance written, but deployment was delayed.
